Celebrating 12 x 12 in 2012's Halfway Mark

It's A Blog Party!

Join the fun!
In January, I signed up for Julie Hedlund's 12x12 in 2012, which challenged writers to write a picture book a month for 12 months.

I had ideas brewing in my mind.  This was the perfect opportunity to get them out on paper in the form of a full story.

Well, we're at our halfway mark so each of us participants are throwing a blog party!

I have spent my time developing my stories and have written 6 picture book drafts so far.  I've developed a special relationship with my characters throughout these months.  So, I'd like to honor my main characters by inviting them to my party.  Allow me to introduce them:

Chocolate Bunny- He thinks he's the best tasting bunny around.  He and his friend, Strawberry Bunny argue over who is better.  Don't be surprised if Chocolate Bunny asks you to nibble at his ear to prove his point.

Blackbird- Blackbird can never be satisfied with where he's at.  He'll find the perfect spot to nest, until he sees Sparrow in a tree that is more lush and green than his.  Blackbird convinces Sparrow to give up her spot.  But just as he does, Blackbird always finds Sparrow somewhere  better than his.  So don't tell Blackbird where you are living because he'll want to take over your home too.

Spencer- He's not your typical spider.  He's an artsy-fartsy spider who spins the most amazing web, until the other spiders taunt him.  Spencer doesn't like to be teased so he puts his artistic talents aside to prove that he can be a regular creepy crawling, fly-catching spider like everyone else.  But let's face it.  He's just not that kind of spider.  Spencer proves to catch more than just flies with his talents.  If you run into Spencer, don't squash him until you've had a chance to admire his creations.

Bella- Five-year-old Bella can never go anywhere without her umbrella- rain or shine, until it proves to be more trouble than it's worth.  I'm sure she'll be bringing her umbrella to this blog party.

Jack- Before Jack became Jack, he was just a pumpkin who can't see, hear, smell, or think until the little boy, who took care of him, opened his mind to the possibilities.  Jack is not much of a partier, but rest assured, his company alone will leave you with memories.

Crum- Crum lives in the deepest corner of your pocket where no fingertip has gone before.  Crum had never seen the world outside of his home, until now.  He's one of those people who shows up uninvited.  But you can't blame him.  He feels lonely in this big, scary world so he's looking for company.

Let's all give a warm welcome to my main characters!

Here at my blog party, I'm putting aside the tea and scones, notebook and pen, and bringing out the chocolates and champagne, and party hats and confetti!
Let's all toast to another 6 months of creating settings that shine, plots that deliver, and characters who inspire.  Here's to success!

~HAPPY WRITING!

  1. Hi Romelle,
I LOVE your characters...do you do the illustrations as well? Congrats on writing 6 pb drafts...best of luck and happy writing for the next six months of 2012! We're in the middle of a huge wildfire that has spread to the city (Colorado Springs)...so it is a pretty scary time right now...hoping they will be able to contain it before it causes more destruction and problems.

  23. Very fun! All you characters are such characters. :) However, I think Bella and her umbrella are my favorite, but maybe that's because we just moved to Oregon (famous for its rain).
