Book Review: Duck & Goose by Tad Hills

Remember playing duck, duck, goose as a child?  It's a game in which players sit in a circle while another player goes around tapping on each players head calling each a "duck" until he/she picks a player to be the "goose."  The "goose" then stands and chases the tapper around the circle.  The "tapper" tries to return to the place where the "goose" had been sitting before getting caught.  If successful, the "goose" is now the "tapper" and the game starts all over again.  If not, then the "tapper" remains the "tapper."

I first played this game in kindergarten and enjoyed it.  So when I discovered DUCK & GOOSE at my local library, I had to read it.  On the cover, Duck and Goose are not sitting in a circle, but on a circlea  ball.  I had to find out what Duck and Goose were up to in this story by Tad Hills.  Here is my review:

Duck & GooseDuck & Goose by Tad Hills
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a heart-warming, yet funny, story about a duck and a goose who squabble over their discovery.
"...what is that?" asked Duck.
"It's a big egg, of course," said Goose.

The dialogue between Duck and Goose is authentic and hilarious that you can't help but fall in love with these characters. These apparent strangers eventually come to terms with their shared responsibility of caring for the egg. Throughout the process, their relationship flourishes. But instead of two budding friends, they end up sounding like first-time parents. This is a book that will delight both children and parents. And even if the story is predictable, it still offers a sweet and satisfying ending that'll inspire you to read it over again.

Duck and Goose by Tad Hills is sure to please everyone young and old.
